RetroSnake Back to the game

Terms of Use

Effective 20 September 2026. Applies to the RetroSnake web app at retrosnake.jlrdev.co.za and to the RetroSnake app published on Google Play.

RetroSnake is free to play, and it is provided as it is. You may play it as much as you like. You may not copy it, sell it or pass it off as your own. If it ever goes wrong, our liability is limited - and because you have paid nothing, that limit is effectively nothing.

None of this takes away rights you have as a consumer under the law of your own country. Those rights win.

1. Who you are agreeing with

These terms are between you and JL Reynders, trading as JLR Dev, Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa, jan-louis@jlrdev.co.za. They apply when you play RetroSnake at retrosnake.jlrdev.co.za or through the app installed from Google Play.

By playing, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not play.

2. Your licence to play

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable licence to play RetroSnake for your own enjoyment. That is the whole of what is granted.

3. What you may not do

Reading the source in your browser is not permission to reuse it. See the LICENSE file shipped with the game.

4. It is free, and it may not always exist

RetroSnake costs nothing. We may change it, add to it, take features away, or stop publishing it entirely, at any time and without notice. We are not obliged to keep it running, and no refund arises because nothing was paid.

If we ever introduce a paid feature, it will be clearly marked as such before you are charged, and these terms will be updated first.

5. Your scores live on your device

Your high score, leaderboard and achievements are stored only in your own browser. We keep no copy. Clearing your browser data, switching browsers, switching devices or uninstalling the app will lose them permanently, and we cannot recover them for you. This is a consequence of collecting nothing about you, and it is deliberate.

6. No warranty

The game is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of anything harmful, or that it will work on any particular device or browser.

7. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, JL Reynders, trading as JLR Dev is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for lost data, lost profits or lost time, arising out of your use of RetroSnake.

Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, it is limited in total to the greater of (a) the amount you actually paid us for RetroSnake, which is ZAR 0.00, and (b) ZAR 500.

Nothing here limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that may not lawfully be limited.

8. Your consumer rights are not waived

Nothing in these terms removes or reduces any right you have under the South African Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008, or under any mandatory consumer law of the European Union, the United Kingdom or your own country of residence. Where a term here conflicts with such a right, that right applies and the term does not.

9. Third-party components

RetroSnake includes typefaces licensed to us by their authors. They remain the property of those authors and are used under their own licences, which are listed at Licences & Attribution. Nothing in these terms restricts your rights under those licences.

10. Independence

RetroSnake is an original game inspired by the snake games of the 1990s. It is not associated with, endorsed by or connected to Nokia Corporation or any other maker of a snake game, and it contains none of their code or artwork. All trademarks referred to are the property of their respective owners.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa, and the courts of South Africa have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory law of your own country, or of the right to bring proceedings there.

12. Changes

If these terms change, the effective date at the top changes with them and the new version is published here. Continuing to play after that means you accept the new version.
